Nicely done! I loved reading Green Dolphin Street. I have some lovely quotes from it in my quote book that I may post on my Substack sometime.

A fellow reader who often sacrifices sleep for good books!

Kristen,

I love your reviews—they’re so personable. I often get up in the middle of the night to read, too, anywhere from 11 to 3, staying up about two hours. When I come back, my husband has taken over my side of the bed and I have to gently remind him that’s my territory. But as you say, “My happy soul reminded me that some books are better than a good night’s sleep.”

Isn’t that interesting you read the book some time ago and revisited it recently. I was not familiar with it (though I do like the title and wondered why I hadn’t at least heard of it). Coming from the 40s, as it does, I was reminded of another book, Rebecca, by Daphne duMaurier, that I read in high school. I remember my English teacher telling me it was very popular when it was written and I remember, after writing my book report, seeing it on a TV channel that played old movies. I couldn’t tell you now what it was about, though I was entranced, finding the story romantic, mysterious, and sophisticated. Not like the romances my high school friends were reading.

Back to your review. I enjoyed your descriptions of the two sisters and loved the plotline: two sisters in love with the same man and a mistake being made with the wrong sister (not the one the man was in love with) getting the man and the other going off to a convent.

Our Savannah library does not own a copy, but I learned that a movie was made of it in 1947 starring Lana Turner, Van Heflin, and Donna Reed. (Great cast!) So I may just get the movie!

It’s also nice that you have some “study questions” which make me even more interested in the story. Here’s one: “Do you think romantic love is necessary to integrate one’s personality before God?” Something I’d never thought about—So I’m looking forward to seeing the movie and thinking about what you ask.

We would be so delighted to see this book back in print! I wonder if that might be possible?! I do know that Loyola books have reprinted quite a few novels under their imprint Loyola Classics. I should ask them.

The format of the book reviews is to facilitate book clubs — so hopefully we can beta test an online book club format in a few months. ☺️

Thanks for your great feedback!
